Where we currently use AI

We use AI in a number of different ways across Leukaemia Care. Every project is assessed before it is introduced and continues to be reviewed as it develops.

Supporting people affected by leukaemia

Improving our support groups

We use AI-assisted meeting notes during some online support group meetings. This helps us capture important discussion points, answer follow-up questions and share meeting summaries with attendees after the session.

We also analyse anonymised themes from support groups to help us better understand the information and support needs of people affected by leukaemia. This helps us identify trends over time and improve our services.

Mia, our AI assistant

Mia is our AI assistant, designed to help answer questions about leukaemia, blood cancer and Leukaemia Care's services.

She uses approved Leukaemia Care information to provide trusted answers and signpost people to further support where appropriate. Mia is designed to support people, not replace healthcare professionals or our support team.

Improving our information

Creating trusted health information

We sometimes use AI to help identify relevant scientific journals, clinical guidelines and other evidence when developing patient information.

Every source identified by AI is checked by a member of our team before it is used, helping us ensure that our information remains accurate and evidence based.

Making information more accessible

AI can help us make our information easier to understand and more accessible.

For example, we use AI to help improve the reading age of written content, develop visual resources for children and explore new ways of making information available in British Sign Language (BSL). All AI-generated content is reviewed by people before it is published.

Improving our fundraising

AI helps our fundraising team with tasks that would otherwise take many hours to complete.

This includes drafting first versions of grant applications, improving fundraising communications, creating content for event webpages and helping review anonymised London Marathon applications against our published selection criteria. Staff always review and edit AI-generated content before it is used.

We have also developed a custom GPT to help assist our 2027 TCS Double London Marathon runners with their everyday questions.

Supporting our staff

AI supports our teams with a range of everyday administrative tasks, including:

  • Drafting first versions of policies, procedures and risk assessments.
  • Summarising meeting recordings and identifying actions.
  • Improving the clarity and accessibility of documents and emails.
  • Helping structure research projects and literature reviews.
  • Exploring project management ideas and administrative planning.

These tools help reduce administration so our staff can spend more time focusing on delivering services and supporting people.

Looking ahead

Artificial Intelligence is developing quickly, and we continue to explore new ways it could improve our services.

Before introducing any new AI tool, we consider:

  • Whether it benefits the people we support.
  • How it affects privacy and data protection.
  • Whether human oversight is needed.
  • Whether it aligns with our values and our approach to responsible AI.

We'll continue to update this page as our use of AI evolves.
