Leukaemia Care joins Martin Lewis in successfully campaigning for the energy price guarantee hike to be postponed

Leukaemia Care proudly joined Martin Lewis and MoneySavingExpert in calling on the Chancellor to postpone the energy price hikes, rather than increasing them from 1 April 2023 as planned.

Published: 15th March 2023

We launched our #LeukaemiaLevy campaign earlier this month, urging the UK governments and energy companies for better financial support for leukaemia, MDS and MPN patients.

Since launching #LeukaemiaLevy, we then joined Martin Lewis and MoneySavingExpert’s campaign calling for the energy price guarantee to be extended beyond April 2023. We are pleased to say that the Chancellor has since agreed to extend the energy price guarantee until the end of June, which was announced today as a part of the spring budget.

We are proud to have been a part of this campaign which has seen one of our campaign aims achieved. However, more still needs to be done.

The increasing costs of energy bills and food costs, with the added outgoing of hospital travel, are significant concerns.

On Tuesday 13th March, we took our campaign to the doors of decision-makers: Downing Street. We hand-delivered a letter to the Prime Minister asking for more support. In Scotland, we sent a letter to the First Minister and met with Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) outside of Parliament at Holyrood.

Leukaemia Care’s CEO, Zack Pemberton-Whiteley, commented:

“Many leukaemia patients are facing financial hardship as a result of their diagnosis, hardship which has been exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis. As the UK’s leading leukaemia charity, we are now taking our #LeukaemiaLevy campaign to Downing Street. We urge the Government to take action to provide greater support for patients and their families. This cannot wait, the economic situation in the UK may improve, but without further support from the Government those affected by a leukaemia diagnosis will continue to be impacted by financial challenges long after the cost of living crisis ends.”

Our campaign is just the beginning, and we hope to continue advocating for leukaemia patients and their families beyond the cost of living crisis.
