What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a type of technology that can understand and generate language, summarise information and help complete certain tasks.

At Leukaemia Care, we use AI to support some of our work, helping us save time on administrative tasks so we can spend more time supporting people affected by leukaemia.

Why does Leukaemia Care use AI?

We use AI where it helps us improve our services, increase efficiency or make our information more accessible.

Like many organisations, AI allows us to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks while keeping people at the centre of everything we do.

Does AI replace your staff?

No.

Our staff remain responsible for the services we provide, the information we publish and the support we offer.

AI is a tool that helps our teams work more efficiently. It does not replace the expertise, compassion or judgement of our staff and volunteers.

Is Mia a doctor?

No.

Mia is an AI assistant designed to help answer questions about leukaemia and Leukaemia Care's services using approved information.

She cannot diagnose medical conditions, provide personalised medical advice or replace your healthcare team.

If you have concerns about your health or treatment, you should always speak to your clinical team.

Is everything AI says correct? AI can sometimes make mistakes.

AI can sometimes make mistakes.

That's why we carefully review AI-generated content before it is published where appropriate, and why tools like Mia are designed using approved Leukaemia Care information.

If you're ever unsure about something you've read, please contact us or speak to your healthcare team.

Does AI make decisions about me?

No.

AI does not make decisions about the support you receive from Leukaemia Care.

Important decisions are always made by people.

Will you use more AI in the future?

Probably.

Technology is developing quickly, and we continue to explore new ways AI could improve our services.

Before introducing any new AI tool, we consider privacy, security, human oversight and whether it aligns with our values.

We'll continue to update our AI Hub as our use of AI evolves.

Can I ask questions about your use of AI?

Yes.

If you have any questions or concerns about how Leukaemia Care uses Artificial Intelligence, we'd be happy to hear from you.
